Frequently Asked Questions

We will all have drifting minds at times; our meditation guide and the music helps bring people back to the present moment.

No problem! We all have drifting minds and stubborn thought loops that we get stuck in at times (or even most of the time). The good news is that meditation isn’t about stopping thoughts. Meditation is practicing and learning to notice our thought patterns, individual thoughts and emotions. This is Mindfulness Meditation – a state of “non-elaborative, non-judgmental awareness” of the present-moment experience. (Kabatt-Zinn)

At Elevated Meditation, we meditate with a growth mindset. It doesn’t matter what level we begin at, it’s only important to notice our own progress and growth. We have people who are trying meditation for the first time and we also have experienced meditators practicing with us.

Throughout the class, we use techniques such as anchoring, grounding and self regulation to pull ourselves back into the present moment. If we are feeling caught up in trauma, one of these techniques can be used to pull ourselves out of it. These techniques, along with being in the present moment and having an attitude of compassion for ourselves can help us to heal trauma.

If you are concerned about having a trauma reaction during the experience, please let us know prior to the class. In addition to the built in techniques used in class, we can also customize your experience and provide you with options to help you feel safe and secure with us.

We practice a modern style of meditation that combines time-tested and proven practices, science and wellness modalities. We don’t have any religious affiliation or principles that we ascribe to. Participants have their own intentions and goals for their practice which follow their personal belief system.

Our silk hammocks are designed to relieve pressure on the body, creating a comfortable experience. We also have 3 inch thick memory foam mattresses, knee bolsters and blankets used to make comfortable spaces on the floor for those who prefer this. Also, if a sitting position is preferred, we have this option available too.

All ages can benefit in meditation, however our class is best suited for those ages 10 years and older. We love the idea of meditation for kids younger than 10, and we hope to create a specialized class for this population in the future.

The silk hammocks are stronger than they may appear!

Our systems have a Working Load Limit (WLL) of 377lbs (171kg) with a Factor of Safety (FoS) of 7:1. This is based on a test loading of 2645lbs (1200kg) at which point NO damage/deflection/tearing occurred.

Falling asleep sometimes happens when you’re meditating. It’s important to be gentle with ourselves as we learn and practice the skill of meditation. As we get used to the meditation process, we are better able to hold that gentle space between sleep and awake. If you’d like personalized tips, ask one of our guides for help. The good news is there are benefits received from the sound bath, even as one sleeps.

If a person is snoring, we will gently tap their foot to awaken them slightly. This will allow them to stay in a deep state of relaxation, yet not distract others.

The thought of sitting still for an extended period of time can be daunting to some people. Most people are surprised how fast the class goes by as they lose themselves in the present moment. Our classes are modern in nature and allow for slight movements, adjustments, shifting positions, etc. In the privacy of your hammock, you’ll be able to adjust without others seeing you or even hearing you.

Cell phones are not allowed inside the meditation studio, however there will be a location to store them just outside the studio.

Comfort is most important in a meditation class, so ideally, wear something comfortable. We also understand the busy lives many people lead and so if you come to class in your work attire, or exercise attire, this is fine too. Please keep in mind that our hammocks are delicate, so please refrain from clothing with sharp or jagged edges. We have cubbies to store items such as keys, cell phones, jackets, etc, so if you forget to leave something at home, this isn’t a problem.

Sometimes our brains aren’t able to relax because we are constantly wondering what is happening next. To prevent this, we are sharing an outline of what you can expect from the moment you arrive to the end of the class.

When you arrive, we’ll ask you to take off your shoes and silence your cell phones. We’ll have secured cubbies where you can place all your belongings. There are restrooms to visit if needed, before entering the studio and hammocks.

In the studio, we’ll teach you how to get into the hammock. Once you see this demonstrated and learn a couple tips, you’ll see how easy it is.

The class will start when everyone is inside their hammock and comfortable. The meditation guide will begin the class with easy breathing exercises, acupressure activities, and the guide will share meditation strategies while easy background music is playing. These activities allow a person to slowly relax and come into the present moment.

When the bowls begin to play, the guide will walk you through a body scan and then smoothly transition into the meditation. During the meditation, you’ll be prompted to use your imagination and feel positive emotions. You’ll notice there are times there is only music playing and times with the guide talking you through next steps. If at any point you don’t want to follow the guide’s prompts, or if you want to change it in a way that suits you best, feel free to do this.

Near the end of the class, the guide will prompt you to bring your awareness back to the room, and your body. You’ll have some time to slowly awaken as the music ends and some lights are turned on. When you are ready, step out of the hammock and gather your belongings. Most people feel fresh and renewed after the class, we hope this for you too!

If you have any serious medical conditions, for example: Metal devices in your body, Brain injury, Epilepsy; make sure to get permission from your doctor allowing your attendance to a live sound bath.
